Keep an eye on those around you and pay attention to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The most important thing you can do to make your community safe is to know your neighbors and their regular visitors as much as you can. Say hi, introduce yourself to your neighbors and if they do not want to engage you in conversation then just be polite. Remember what they look like, where they live and who their associates and family members are (at least visually). This helps you to distinguish who is in your neighborhood or building and if they belong. It will also point out any suspicious activity that some neighbors may be engaging in. Notify the Police if you discover any suspicious activity. You can remain anonymous if you choose when reporting suspicious activity. Do not let anyone into your building if they do not belong or your do not recognize them regardless of what their story is.
Keep adequate lighting on the interior and exterior of your residence. If you leave your home overnight make sure to leave an interior light on and lock all windows and doors. Activate your alarm and surveillance systems if you have them. Stop your mail until you return. Ask the watch commander of your local Police department for an extra Patrol of your neighborhood if it is an extended leave. Get a secret safe like a hollow air freshener for small valuables and cash.
Keep all exterior doors and garages locked/dead bolted and windows secure with glass film and window jams. Go to the link below http://www.aceorangecounty.com/400.htm for the glass film info. Do not leave a spare key in predictable place like under a mat or door frame.
Keep a detailed log of all of your valuables with serial numbers and video/photo proof of ownership. Recovery and insurance claim efforts will be simple if your valuables happen to be stolen or damaged in an earth quake flood or fire.
